Ride START

The 1987 Jackson to Teton Village ski bus has come a long way. Southern Teton Area Rapid Transit (START) now has an expansive 30-bus network serving the Town of Jackson and Teton County, with routes to and from Star Valley and Teton Valley, Idaho. START reduces our community's driven miles by over 3 million per year, translating into approximately 100,000 less gallons of fuel and 1.8 million less pounds of CO2 per year. In addition, START greatly reduces the demand for multi-lane roads, helping our community maintain its unique character.

In 2013, the Town of Jackson, Teton County, START, the Wyoming Department of Transportation, Friends of Pathways, the LOR Foundation, Jackson Hole Land Trust, Safe Wildlife Crossing JH, and the Jackson Hole Wildlife Foundation all partnered on a new START facility grant through Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER). The result is a new state of the art regional transit facility, a new Karns meadow pathway, and improved pathways on West Broadway. The new facility was thoughtfully engineered to acommodate future alternative fuels like Compressed Natural Gas or Biodiesel, and/or Electric Charging for buses and all Town and County government fleets.



In support of this landmark project, Energy Conservation Works installed a roof-top 111 kW photovoltaic system that will generate roughly 133,000 kWh per year, supplying 80% of START’s electrical needs and saving over 180,000 pounds of CO2 annually.
